This paper attempts to show the identity of Assimilation and Assertion of the female protagonist in Bharati Mukherjee\u27s latest novel Miss New India. Bharati Mukherjee is making a statement about her own experiences and observations on the issues faced as a woman in traditional Indian and foreign country by the medium of her female characters. The main purpose of this study is to focus on Assimilation and Assertion of the female character Anjali Bose, is in constant search of ways to escape the conservative environment of Gauripur, a small town in Bihar. It also discusses the women protagonist Anjali Bose is psychologically suppressed in the male-dominated society. While the male characters of her novels have received, more or less, enough attention the female characters seem to be marginalized by the critics who have discussed the female characters more in terms of their relation to the story\u27s male characters and analyzing the facets of oppression like sexuality, motherhood, mothering, and domestic labour. And it also discusses the number of questions related to trauma survivor and quest for Identity of the female characters who struggle to come out of the Attitude of Assimilation and Assertion

Light will be Thrown: The Emerging Science of Cultural Evolution

    Get PDF
Culture evolves, not just in the trivial sense that cultures change over time, but also in the strong sense that such change is governed by Darwinian principles. Both biological and cultural evolution are essentially cumulative selection processes in which information ā€“ whether genetic or cultural ā€“ is sieved, retained and then transmitted to the next generation. In both domains such a process will result in recognizable lineages and tree-like phylogenies so characteristic of Darwinian evolution. Because a principle of inheritance (i.e., faithful replication of information) holds in both domains, we may trace back particular transmission histories and identify the forces that influenced them. The idea that culture evolves is quite old, but only in recent years there has been a serious effort to turn this idea into science. This article offers a concise analysis of how a rudimentary idea gradually evolved into a thriving research program

Covering Pulse: Understanding the Lived Experience of Journalists Who Covered a Mass Shooting

    Get PDF
When 49 people were gunned down in an Orlando nightclub in 2016, journalists from all over Central Florida went toward the nightclub, not away from it. This study explores the lived experience of 18 journalists who covered the Pulse nightclub shooting. Participants came from a variety of news outletsā€”print, television, and radioā€”and from a variety of positionsā€”reporters, photographers, and editors. Participants described the chaotic environment and the ethical issues they faced. This paper sheds light on how journalists handle situations like the Pulse shooting and the need to monitor the mental health of those who were on the frontlines covering it

Language learning and Language acquisition; What do the Learners Prefer?

    Get PDF
The aim of this study is to evaluate learning and acquisition strategies used by second language learners of Engineering College Students in Tamilnadu State. This study is a comparative investigation of learning and acquisition strategies of successful and less successful language learners. Why some learners become less successful in language learning while others become more successful is a common question in this area. Although there are many different reasons, one of them is related with ā€œstrategiesā€ of the learners. Ā The study presents an analysis of a research to capture second language learnersā€™ learning strategies in terms of acquisition and learning. Two hundred and twenty undergraduate higher education students were participated in the study. They were grouped in two parts as ā€œSuccessful learnersā€ and ā€œless successful Learnersā€ learners. The learnersā€™ levels were based on their scores in a standardized test administered at the beginning of their College. These findings have important implications for College Professors,School Teachers, instructors and program designers to develop and practice different language strategies in order to have more successful students. At the end of the study, some suggestions were submitted to foreign language learners and secondary language learners also

Objective: The study was an attempt to discover a lead molecule to treat helminthiasis using Vitex trifolia. Linn (V. folia Linn) through sterile effect, in vitro and in silico evaluation. Methods: The antibacterial activity was done by Kirby-Bauer disc diffusion method in three different concentrations of extract and in vitro anthelmintic activity was carried out by petri dish and organ bath method. Further, the in silico docking studies were carried out by 11 phytoconstituents against phosphoethanolamine methyltransferase (4FGZ) using Auto Dock 4.2, it was working based on the principle of Lamarckian genetic algorithm. In docking studies, three important parameters such as binding energy, inhibition constant and intermolecular energy are determined. Results: The extracts showed an antibacterial effect in three different concentrations. At 16 mcg/disc a significant effect was observed when compared to blank and ciprofloxacin 5 mcg/disc. The anthelmintic activity in the petri dish method, means paralyzing time of Pheretimaposthuma with the dose of 25, 50 and 100 mg/ml were 13.78, 5.79 and 4.57 min respectively and Piperazine citrate (10 mg/ml) showed paralysis in 21.58 min. In the organ bath method, the time for paralysis of the worm was recorded on a slow-moving Sherrington rotating drum and the study report showed that paralyzing time was decreased at increasing concentrations of the extract. The results of in silico studies exhibited a binding energy of-10.25kcal/mol, inhibitory constant (Ki) 30.91nM, intermolecular energy,-10.84kcal/mol for abietatriene-3-ol which is lesser than the standard ligand phosphoethanolamine (-6.03kcal/mol, 38.29ĀµM,-7.82kcal/mol) respectively. Conclusion: The study reports conclude that the active constituents in V. folia Linn having better anthelmintic activity, thus the active constituents may be optimized and make way to a new moiety for the treatment of helminthiasis

Arsenic-induced oxidative stress in fresh water catfish Tilapia mossambica

    Get PDF
An experiment was conducted to investigate bioaccumulation potential of arsenic and changes in oxidative stress indices in liver tissue from arsenic exposed fish Tilapia mossambica were used for the present investigation. The Tilapia mossambica were exposed to two non lethal doses of arsenic for 10 days, which induced tissue lipid peroxidation, increased the ratio of oxidized to reduced glutathione and produced excess H2O2 within 1ƃĀ¢Ć¢ā€šĀ¬Ć¢ā‚¬Å“2 days of exposure. Furthermore, arsenic treatment increased the activity of antioxidant enzymes such as superoxide dismutase (SOD), and catalase but decreased glutathione reductase (GR) activity within a day of exposure, indicating the generation of oxidative stress in fish at an early stage. It is therefore concluded that peroxisomal H2O2 metabolizing enzymes are potential targets of arsenic toxicity in Tilapia mossambica

Post-Modern Feminist Ideology in Mahesh Dattaniā€™s Where Thereā€™s a Will and Final Solutions

A true art is not meant for teaching and preaching. Its primary function is to give delight; its purpose is chiefly aesthetic. Only a writer, who maintains a perfect blending of both feeling and form, can push upward the art at its zenith. Mahesh Dattani exposes the illusion of perfect and complete control over the family for a longer period. Here the question arises in our mind why a man aspires too much for authority and power. Does it signify any value of life? Apparently it doesnā€™t attach any meaning to human existence. Nor does, it helps in improving quality of human life. Dattani is convinced that it is an attempt to make one-self secure and survive. So, manā€™s drive for the domination arises out of his own apprehension of insecurity. The dramatist mainly reflects on the issues of gender discrimination and evil of patriarch along with host of other issues like father-son, husband-wife relationship, evil of capitalism in the post colonial purview.

This Research paper Focuses on Dominance of power and mythological creatures in the The play The Fire and the Rain, Which occurs in a small region of India long ago that has experienced a lack of rain for ten years. The king proposed to propitiate the Gods through fire sacrifice. So that God would be pleased and send rain to the parched land. In this fire sacrifice Paravasu the son of a learned Brahmin Raibhya, was appointed as the Chief Priest. And the play deals with this appointment and the disappointments of certain other characters. One disappointment definitely with reference to the father going by ancient Indian tradition, a lot of emphasis was put on age seniority i.e. age has always been respected. Older people have always been considered wiser because of their wider experience. Going by this tradition the learned Raibhya should have been appointed as the chief Priest but for practical reasons longevity of life span, the King chose to appoint Paravasu, the elder son as the Chief Priest. This appointment had disappointed and agonized the senior. The high priest of the temple, Paravasu is eager to perform a ceremony to bring rain. the play The Fire and The Rain opens with the representative of an actor`s group expressing their desire to give a dramatic performance as a means of entertainment for the Gods. After much discussion the group is given permission to perform at the fire sacrifice
